Summer’s here. Hopefully by now you have had your homes HVAC system serviced so it is operating at peak efficiency to keep your home cool and to maximize energy savings and reduce costs. But that is not all you can do to reduce your energy costs in the summer. Here are some more tips (note: many of these are good for all year round):
Windows and window coverings
Thermostat
Fans
Appliances and Lighting
Windows and window coverings
- When the temperature cools off, give your AC unit a break. Turn it off and open the windows.
- Keep your blinds or shades closed during the day to keep the hot sun from making your house warmer and causing your AC unit to work harder.
- Make sure there are no cracks or openings in your windows (and doors) that will let hot air in.
Thermostat
- Consider a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature and maximize energy savings while maximizing comfort. Many programmable thermostats can be controlled remotely through your phone or tablet.
- If you do not have a programmable thermostat, set it higher when you are away. Try also to set it higher when you are sleeping.
- Some areas of the home – like the basement – are naturally cooler. If you are going to be in a cooler area for an extended period, turn the thermostat higher.
Fans
- Ceiling fans can let you raise the temperature as much as 4° without reducing comfort.
- But turn them off when you leave the room. They cool people – not rooms.
- Attic fans can also reduce energy costs.
Appliances and Lighting
- Keep the lights turned off. Light produces heat, and drives up energy costs.
- Do not place lamps, televisions or other items near the thermostat. This will raise the thermostat’s temperature and cause the AC unit to run longer.
- Avoid using the oven and stove; use the microwave or grill outside.

- Wash only full loads of clothes or dishes. Let the dishes and clothes air dry.
- Turn off all appliances, computers, etc. when not in use.
