As you are preparing your list, here are 12 resolutions (one for each month) for caring for your heating and air conditioning system. These preventive tips will help you keep your central air conditioning system and other HVAC appliances in optimum condition.
- Schedule a maintenance check for your air conditioner in the spring and your furnace in the fall. These inspections ensure your units are running efficiently, and can prevent small problems from becoming large problems.
- Change your air filter...monthly for 1” filters and every six months for thicker filters. This prevents dirt from slowing air flow and increasing energy costs.
- Invest in a programmable thermostat. These can lower your energy bills while still making sure you are comfortable when you are home. According to Energy Star, a programmable thermostat can save the average home $180 per year in energy costs.
- Consider purchasing a new air conditioner or furnace if the unit is 15 years old or older, is making funny noises, or if you are making increasingly expensive repairs.
- Consider an air filtration system. These systems can improve the air quality in your home, reducing the risk of health problems and increasing comfort.
- Rearrange the furniture to make sure vents and registers are not blocked.
- Check your ducts for leaks.
- Seal your doors and windows to prevent cold air from entering the home during winter and hot air during summer.
- Make sure your outdoor compressor is free of debris, foliage and other obstructions.
- Utilize ceiling fans in both the summer and winter.
- Purchase a whole house humidifier to keep air at the proper humidity level during winter.
- Make sure your home is properly insulated. Consider spray foam insulation if you are building a new home, or remodeling.
